I know summer hasn’t officially ended, but I am excited to share with you the upcoming lineup for the fall theatre season, starting with the month of September. There are a variety of shows gearing up to hit the stage at the 20-plus theatres in San Diego County. So find your theatre buddy or attempt to introduce someone new to theatre. First up, for the month of September, is “Limelight: The Story of Charlie Chaplin” and “Miss Saigon.” Both shows premiere this week. La Jolla Playhouse will stage the world-premiere musical “Limelight: The Story of Charlie Chaplin” Tuesday, Sept. 7. Charlie Chaplin came to America an unknown and left amidst scandals and controversy. In between, he became one of the best-loved and most famous entertainers in the world. From the gritty streets and smoky music halls of London to movie screens across the globe, Limelight goes behind the camera to show how a comic genius found soaring success and later fell from grace. This thrilling world-premiere musical provides a captivating close-up on the man who changed motion pictures forever. “Miss Saigon” will take center stage for the first time at the Moonlight Amphitheatre Wednesday, Sept. 8. “Miss Saigon” is the re-telling of Madame Butterfly set during the fall of Saigon. Two lovers, Chris and Kim, an American GI and a Vietnamese girl, are united by love but separated by war in the Tony Award-winning pop opera. Opening amidst the turmoil of the last days of the Vietnam War, Chris and Kim struggle to find each other in the ensuing years following the war. “Miss Saigon” is a moving testament to the human spirit and a raw and uncompromising reflection on the tragedies of war.
The Old Globe has teamed up with the San Diego History Center to bring to life one of the greatest costume collections San Diego has ever known, showcasing Oct. 15-April 15.The exhibit takes a hands-on approach to the world of costume design, allowing visitors both to view the impressive costume collection on display as well as dress up with some of the costumes in the collection.“Dressing the Part is a departure from the norm,” said History Center Executive Director David Kahn. “It is more than just an opportunity to collaborate with another Balboa Park organization, it is an example of our new focus here at the History Center, which is to offer our visitors truly interactive experiences.”The goal of the experience is to give a unique look into the world of costume design, showcasing both the efforts of costume designers and its effects on actors. With the Old Globe’s contributions, the world of costume design truly comes alive as visitors can track the life of a particular costume piece from its early sketches into full production.The History Center and the Globe have expertly utilized technology in the exhibit to make the experience more interactive.
Take a seriously wild musical ride back to that most awesome of decades, featuring the greatest hits of the 80s, including music by Genesis, Madonna, Sting, U2, Oingo Boingo, The Smiths, Duran Duran, Huey Lewis and the News, Depeche Mode, the Poynter Sisters, Amy Grant and Michael Jackson, among many others. Reagan was in the White House, lycra and legwarmers were the accessories du jour, and a "mix tape" of favorite tunes was the ultimate in self-expression. A lousy economy was about to bounce back like we’d never seen, set to the synthesized beat of 80s Rock. The Cold War was heating up, and with fingers on the nuclear button, the world was sure to end any moment. But for Generation X, life was just beginning. Put on your suspenders, pull out the Members Only jacket, do your hair up with a scrunchy, and have the time of your life at this totally rad musical world premiere.The show, created by Jon Lorenz and Colleen Kollar Smith, is directed by Kerry Meads.When: August 13 – October 3Where: Lamb’s Players Theatre at the Horton Grand Hotel444 4th Ave, Gaslamp QuarterContact: 619-437-6000 or http://www.lambsplayers.org

Surf Report makes a splash in San Diego

Warm weather, family sacrifices, and a town that becomes filled with “more than just good surf.” Sound familiar? “Surf Report,” a new SoCal-based comedy, makes its world premiere this summer as the kick off to La Jolla Playhouse’s new season.
San Diego-born playwright Annie Weisman, who shook up La Jolla Playhouse in 2001 with her play “Be Aggressive,” wrote “Surf Report.”
“La Jolla Playhouse is thrilled to be staging another world premiere of a play by Annie Weisman,” said Christopher Ashley, artistic director for La Jolla Playhouse. “This new work is Annie’s artistic voice at its very best.”
“Surf Report” features Judith, a hard working mother who gets a wake-up call while struggling to balance her tense marriage, dramatic daughter and venture capitalist boss.
Weisman said San Diego is a huge influence on her work.
“In this play, I explore what to me is the fascinating juxtaposition of cultures that exists in La Jolla — the biotech world and the surfing world,” she said. “Here in the midst of beach culture, some of the greatest minds in the world are scientifically innovating.”
In the play, the ocean acts both as a literal backdrop and a metaphor in the play for powerful forces beyond the characters control, Weisman said.
“It’s important to me to write local,” she added. “I like to satirize our culture, but also to pay tribute to it in equal measure.&

rdquo;
“Surf Report” takes the stage starting June 15. For tickets, call 858-550-1010 or visit lajollaplayhouse.org.

An emotive collection of photographs chronicling the creation of the American West
An emotive collection of photographs chronicling the creation of the American West is being showcased in Faces of the Frontier: Photographic Portraits from the American West, 1845-1924. The pictures, organized by the National Portrait Gallery and displayed in the San Diego History Center, feature over 100 figures including Kit Carson, George Custer, Geronimo, Annie Oakley Theodore Roosevelt, and Brigham Young.
“These portraits provide a unique glimpse into the history of the American West,” said David Kahn, executive director of the San Diego History Center. “The exhibition illustrates how photography influenced the understanding of the West by giving a face to the changing shape of the country.”
In the 80 years between the Mexican War and the Indian Citizenship Act, the country was certainly changing. The photographs chronicle events such as the completion of the transcontinental railroad, on-going conflicts between Native Americans and non-natives, the emergence of the national parks movement, the admittance of 19 new states west of the Mississippi, and the philosophy of manifest destiny that inspired explorers to connect the West to the already established East.
The images come from noted photographers of the period such as Charles Milton Bell, Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner, Edward Sheriff Curtis, and Eadweard Muybridge. The San Diego History Center is the only West Coast venue for this traveling exhibition.
