Historic preservation on film
California’s oldest historic preservation group, Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO), marks its 40th anniversary with the release of a documentary recounting its history from 1969 through 2009.
The documentary, produced by San Diego based filmmaker Dan Soderberg, highlights SOHO’s pivotal role in preserving historic architecture throughout San Diego. What began as a demonstration 40 years ago to save the 1887 Victorian Sherman-Gilbert House soon birthed the Save Our Heritage Organization when leader Robert Miles Parker foresaw the irreparable damage of redevelopment on the historic neighborhoods of San Diego.
The film celebrates how SOHO has evolved, keeping pace with environmental movements and redevelopment cycles. The organization has been instrumental in preserving historical icons like the Hotel del Coronado, Balboa Theatre, and Santa Fe Depot.
“There is no one SOHO story. There are many stories and all of them are compelling,” Soderberg noted. “SOHO people tend to devote every ounce of their being to the cause, so it was a challenge to pick the stories and tell them in an hour.”
The evening will begin with a wine and cheese reception, followed by the 65-minute documentary.
Where: Old Town Theatre, 4040 Twiggs Street
When: Monday, March 29 at 6 p.m.
Cost: $15 for SOHO members, $20 for non-members

San Diego has always served up pristine beaches, breathtaking views and close proximity to both mountains and desert. And it has long been a tourist destination thanks to its history. With so many offerings across the growing county, we felt it was time to recognize the very best of our city — from restaurants to beaches, from shopping to hiking trails. We surveyed long-time residents across the county to get their recommendations on the best ways to spend time with family or friends.
We have organized our best of the city by relationship — things you would do by yourself, as a couple, with your friends or as a family. Whether you go it alone, with your significant other or a group of your closest friends, we want you to enjoy the best that San Diego has to offer.
